R.I.P Vidal Sassoon – a man who revolutionised the world of hairdressing.

We were saddened to hear the news of Vidal Sassoon’s passing today. The world’s first “celebrity hairdresser”, Sassoon rebelled against convention at the time of his upbringing in an orphanage in the tough East End of London, to become a hairdresser and fulfil his passions for an innovative style of hairdressing that changed the lives of women all over the world. For women in the 50s who were used to twice weekly “blow-outs” and lacquered and set styles, Sassoon’s playful, geometric styles and short boyish cuts flouted convention and placed him firmly at the forefront of the 60s fashion movement.

At the grand old age of 84, Sasson was still an influential figure of respect for the biggest names in contemporary hairdressing, the Urban Retreat group and all its’ stylists included - and the focus of a great deal of media interest, documentaries and autobiographies, which will live up to his legacy for many more years to come. RIP Vidal Sassoon.

We are proud to announce the nail team at Urban Retreat, Harrods completely dominated last weekends’ prestigious Nail Championships at the Pro Beauty show at ExCel London. The girls, led by Nail Manager Stephanie Usher (pictured, centre) won First, Second AND Third place in the category they were competing in, proving that the Urban Retreat nail skills are truly unsurpassed in the industry. Despite being nervous over the two hour competition period, the girls managed to achieve perfect sets of glossy and immaculate manicures that really impressed the judges, and simply blew the competition out of the water! Congratulations to Ellie, Angel, Cami, Bogusha, Katya and Milly.

Urban Retreat at Home teamed up with A – List Fashion designer Maria Grachvogel for an exclusive event last night at her beautiful boutique on Culford Gardens, around the corner from Urban Retreat in Knightsbridge. Customers enjoyed complimentary mini manicures and hand massages courtesy of Charlie and Caroline our UR at Home therapists, and were treated to fifteen minute Laura Mercier make-up applications by Edel, Urban Retreat’s expert makeup artist. Over handmade brownies by the East Dulwich Deli, and peach bellini’s, customers were able to peruse the clothes at their leisure, and enjoyed a ten percent discount on purchases made on the night. With a generous 25% off all waxing appointments, now is the perfect time to get rid of unwanted hair on the body or face, so that you are looking your fabulous best at all times – and ensure maintenance is easy until the Big Reveal this Spring!

We offer both hot and strip wax at the Urban Retreat. Hot wax contains beeswax which once applied, sets to room temperature. The wax is removed causing little discomfort as it adheres to the hair rather than the skin and the area will then remain smooth for three to four weeks. This method is best suited for smaller areas.

Strip wax is applied sparingly with a spatula and removed straight away using a fabric or paper strip. It is very easy to control the application, making it ideal for facial hair removal. Sometimes slight reddening may appear to the skin but this fades in a few hours. All our therapists are fully trained and experienced in both methods – and are of course, always discreet and sensitive, if you are feeling anxious!

The Urban Retreat in partnership with UNITE haircare, was proud to be the official hair sponsers of Vintage at Southbank, the coolest new mud-free festival in London. Ticket holders enjoyed glamorous fashion shows, live bands and retro food over a sunny weekend at the end of July and experimented with decade specific beauty makeovers courtesy of the Urban Retreat professionals.

Crystal, Carlos, James, Betsey and Josh created beautiful Bardot-inspired beehives and 70’s curls at Jo Wood’s Soundtrack to Their Lives show. Models glided down the catwalk in Jo’s collection of printed Ossie Clark dresses, beaded Biba capes and thrift store finds, as the jukebox refrains covered an eclectic mix of Seventies disco and Noughties beats. The look was Twenties Finger Curls and Louise Brooks’ bobs at Pearl and Daisy Lowe’s Peacocks show, and Dynasty-style flyaway crimping and bouffants at Sue Tilley’s celebration of the Eighties. The stylists let their imaginations run wild at the British Fashion Council show on Friday evening and enhanced the pillbox hats and berets with retro ‘do’s at Sunday’s British Airways show. The hair and makeup parlours on Southbank were offering free decade-specific makeup and hair touch-ups for the festival-goers, and the Urban Retreat teams were on hand all weekend to supervise every flick of eyeliner and slick of red lippie, whilst creating an assortment of gorgeous vintage hairstyles worthy of an opening night revue at the Theatre Royal.
